Club By-Law Recommended Changes

Current By-Law, Article III, Section 3 for discussion -
|
|
After a review of the current by-law concerning the Annual election of the club. It is the recommendation of the By-law review committee that we make the following change to Article III, Officers and how elected, section 3.

Current By-Law, Article III, Section 3.

The Annual Elections shall be held on the Sunday before the December meeting by secret ballot. The Days and hours of voting shall be the Thursday prior, for 2 hours from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the Saturday prior from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., and the aforementioned Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The ballots shall be prepared by the Secretary and only members in good standing shall be allowed to vote and must show evidence of their membership status to cast a ballot. The Nominating/Election Committee and the Club Secretary shall control the elections and each member voting shall have his name checked off the roster when casting his ballot. A majority of votes is necessary to elect.

A majority of votes are necessary to elect.

This change is being requested because of the following reasons.

The election format was changed with the intent of greater voter turnout with additional days. After five years under this format, we have not seen the additional voter turnout promised. We have seen no change in the voter turnout.

The nominating/election committee has also had difficulty in supporting the expanded dates and hours, with staffing shortages. And they have expressed concern about staffing difficulties going forward.

Therefore, it is the recommendation of the By-Law review committee that we change this By-law back to the original voting structure of just the Sunday before the annual meeting of the club.

There's no doubt about it, people are living longer. While mantras like "70 is the new fifty" maybe akin to exaggerated bluster by those of us facing down milestones, the quality of life for folks over 65 is rising; some of our most active members on the ranges are retirees who have the time and have saved the money to use our facilities. We don't begrudge our life members their discounted rate (suggested voluntary contribution of $25), but realistically those contributions only scratch the surface of what it takes to maintain the Club.
This has been a long standing quandry for the Club and we have observed lots of other institutions impose more stringent requirements to access life membership. This year's executive board had decided to follow suit. We expect to bring forward a bylaws change to change the qualification for life membership to be 15 years of previous membership rather than the current five years. This will ensure that those who receive life membership will have made contributions to the club over something closer to a lifetime, before we confer their discounted life membership.
Any change like this has an effect on some percentage of current members. If you joined 10-14 years ago at 50 or more we may be moving the goalposts on you. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm one of those people. I joined in 2014 so even though I'm 66 years old, I wouldn't have enough years of previous membership (although Rocky think's I should get to count some of my years as 7 apiece, like dog years) to qualify under the new rules. If passed in September, the measure would have to pass again at a later body meeting. If you're betwixt and between like I am apply for life membership this fall. For those who don't turn 65 by year end the board is always open to hardship cases.
