Live Long and Prosper
There's no doubt about it, people are living longer. While mantras like "70 is the new fifty" maybe akin to exaggerated bluster by those of us facing down milestones, the quality of life for folks over 65 is rising; some of our most active members on the ranges are retirees who have the time and have saved the money to use our facilities. We don't begrudge our life members their discounted rate (suggested voluntary contribution of $25), but realistically those contributions only scratch the surface of what it takes to maintain the Club.
This has been a long standing quandry for the Club and we have observed lots of other institutions impose more stringent requirements to access life membership. This year's executive board had decided to follow suit. We expect to bring forward a bylaws change to change the qualification for life membership to be 15 years of previous membership rather than the current five years. This will ensure that those who receive life membership will have made contributions to the club over something closer to a lifetime, before we confer their discounted life membership.
Any change like this has an effect on some percentage of current members. If you joined 10-14 years ago at 50 or more we may be moving the goalposts on you. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm one of those people. I joined in 2014 so even though I'm 66 years old, I wouldn't have enough years of previous membership (although Rocky think's I should get to count some of my years as 7 apiece, like dog years) to qualify under the new rules. If passed in September, the measure would have to pass again at a later body meeting. If you're betwixt and between like I am apply for life membership this fall. For those who don't turn 65 by year end the board is always open to hardship cases.

2026 “C” Division Champions!

Two years ago, I had the great honor of being asked to Captain a new Maynard team. We were placed in the “D” division of the Greater Lowell Trap League and I found out that we were competing against my old Maynard team captained by John Mackesy. They turned out to be our biggest competition and we had a shoot off against them in the final. It was our first win! This year (perhaps because of that win), we were moved to the “C” division and we found Woburn nipping at our heels all season, even as we maintained our first place position. In our first match against them, we won by one bird. In our second match against them, we found ourselves down to four shooters as the three Hills plus Gifford were on vacation. While taking their lowest score minus two in both lines for our fifth score, we lost by three birds! For us, it came down to our last match of the season, if we won, we were the champions! Whether it was because of nerves or we just choked, we lost, which put us into a shoot off with Woburn for first place. What a nail biter! In theory, we should not have won, given that Woburn had a higher team average for the season than we did, but we won 214 v 208!

Thats two for two in two years. What is the secret for our success? I would say several things: 1. We picked a name for ourselves and rallied behind it (Maynard Minutemen).
2. We practice and socialize together and became a “team”.
3. We kept up with the statistics every week and knew when we really needed to focus. 4. Everybody put in the hard work needed to win (and I’m very proud of them)!

All of Maynard’s trap teams get respect out there and we all always compete hard. We have one official trap field and two days to shoot matches on so with one team home and one team away, that means we can have four teams. If we added another day or another field, we could field more teams in the league. Perhaps something to consider for the future?

Trap & Skeet Team A News

Congratulations to Trap Team A - Peter Early, Chris Cannistraro, Alan Humbert, Sean O'Callaghan, Dany Pelletier, Ramzi Maalouf--for winning the Class A Division of the Greater Lowell Trap.
|
It was neck and neck with Billerica till the very end. It had to be resolved via shoot-off at a neutral field, Westford. The team was ready and had their game faces on! They shot their best all season, 237--117, and 120 (a team record for a round and a near perfect score of 125) . Chris C lead the team with a perfect score, 50! Dany P. was next with a 49 (24,25 --first time he ran them!).
The club had 4 teams this year in different skill classes. We are already seeking new shooters for next year--all skills (or even no-skill!) are welcome.
